Andy Eastwood online ukulele workshops - May 2024 Fabulous Formby! May 2024 marks 120 years since the birth of Britain's great ukulele pioneer George Formby, and still uke players are fascinated by the unique rhythmic style of playing that he created. Throughout the month, Andy will present three online workshops to teach you how to play the famous Formby strokes, and how to combine them in an authentic Formby-style uke solo! FOCUS ON FORMBY Tue 7 May, 7.15pm (UK time) Andy lifts the lid on two famous George Formby techniques: the SPLIT STROKE and the TRIPLE, demistifying that right-hand blur by breaking the elements down in slow-motion. The catchy, syncopated rhythmic patterns will jazz up your playing by adding emphasis to different beats of the bar... We will discuss how to take the effort out of your strumming, and begin learning a classic Formby uke solo! FORMBY FOLLOW-UP Tue 14 May, 7.15pm (UK time) This week we will review what you learned in the first session before going on to learn some additional, longer rhythmic patterns. We will then continue to the end of the song we began in part one, and play through the whole solo. Andy will also explain THE SHAKE, and will set some great practice exercises to take away with you... FURTHER FORMBY: THE FAN! Tue 28 May, 7.15pm (UK time) After a two-week break to give you practice time, Andy will answer your questions about what has been learned so far, before going on to explain the greatest mystery of Formby-style playing: how to execute the FAN STROKE, and where it fits in rhythmically!
