1930s
John Grey banjo-uke, to which has been added an
Ibanez banjo pickup, stuck on the vellum right
next to the bridge. The pickup is wired to a
standard jack plug, fitted into the wall of the
pot. This was all done before I acquired the uke,
but all is in working order, tested today. Of
course this can be played as an acoustic banjo-uke
as well!
This is an unusual uke as it is slightly larger
than some: 23.5" overall length, 13.5"
scale length, and with a 10-inch pot which
provides a mellow sound, so, on electrification
it is not too harsh. It has a metal resonator
plate on the back, which also enhances the
acoustic sound. The circular logo plate on the
peghead dates this as pre-WWII. There is also a
John Grey logo badge on the resonator, and serial
number, G5977. All parts seem to be original from
its 1930s manufacture, and all work as they
should, including the tuners. I have
intentionally left it in its 'original' state, (including
the vellum) as I think this adds character, but
it could be refurbished to look like new if
someone wished, the wood and metalwork are sound.
Comes in a brand new hard case, complete with key
and lock!
