Grover long-scale ukulele-banjo SOLD! This is a superb instrument - possibly unique - I have certainly never seen another like it. It comes from the collection of the late Jim Thorogood. Jim was famous in ukulele circles for having one of the world's largest collections; he owned about 150. Two years before his death at the age of 92, he decided to sell them, and chose to keep only about half a dozen choice instruments. This is one he kept, which is some indication of what a special uke it is. It was custom-made for Jim by Warwick Grover in the 1980s, and the workmanship is absolutely exquisite. The wood is beautifully-figured maple, stained to a rich, deep colour, with attractive inlays and binding. The ebony fingerboard is inlaid with decorative mother-of-pearl position markers, and has only minimal playing wear, at the first two frets. All metal parts are gold-plated, including the 'planet' geared tuning pegs. The sound is a magnificent 'chunky' tone, powerful and bright - rather banjo-like in fact. Overall length is 26.25 inches with a scale length (nut to bridge) of 17 inches; this makes it perfect for anyone who wishes to venture up the neck and play melody style - a banjoist would love it! The plastic arm-guard (see pictures) was added by Jim to keep his sleeve off the vellum - this could easily be removed if not required. The condition is excellent with one exception - as can be seen in the photos, the plating is flaking here and there, particularly on the tension hooks, and also on the pegs and tension hoop, where the metal has begun to oxidise. This is of course reflected in the price. The plush-lined hard-shell case is included, and is also in excellent condition. Altogether this is a beautiful work of art, and a very rare chance to own it. |
