| I am selling this
beautiful Gibson UB4, late 1920s vintage. The hoop
is laminated, not block construction and as such shows no
signs of any movement. When I bought this uke I was
told the parts are all original and as far as I can see
they are; tuning pegs, Grover tailpiece, hooks, nuts and
shoes and I would say the metal work is in very good
condition for an 80 year old banjo ukulele with a couple
of dull spots here and there. Since owning this uke I have had a couple of adjustments made by Eddie Uttley, an expert luthier and restorer well known and respected by members of the George Formby Society. The French polish on the neck behind the first three frets had worn away, and the neck of the ukulele did not sit in the back correctly, which affected the action. Both of these things have been corrected and Eddie also hand-made a bridge to get the action spot on. All the French polish has been given a once over and it has a lovely gloss shine, I emphaise the words "once over" as I purposefully did not have the finish completely re-done, simply because it did not need it, and so it is in its original condition and comes with the usual few minor dings you get with a instrument this age. You often hear the term "no wear to fretboard" when a uke is sold but I promise you this fretboard really does have no wear, whoever owned it before kept their nails short and treated it with the love it deserves, you can hopefully see this from the photos. It comes with what I believe to be the original case. I would say this uke is in excellent condition overall. This has the typical UB4 sound, if you want to play 'Formby style' you will certainly be heard. I have found it has the most wonderful tone for playing melody style and the long scale helps you get around the fretboard. It comes with Aquila Nylgut Ukulele strings which I found gives the best sound on this uke in the key of C or D. Why am I selling it? I have spent the last 4 years collecting ukuleles and banjo ukuleles and sadly now I must sell at least one, this is simply one of the ones I play least often. Feel free to come and have a look / play, and watch the demonstration video (see right). I will also have this uke with me at Sheffield GFS meetings and the GFS conventions until I find a buyer. I am looking for around £1,700. |
