Dallas
'E' ukulele-banjo A Dallas model 'E' George Formby
banjo-uke, serial number E/1036.
This instrument belonged to Akira Tsumura and
appeared on page 272 of the famous book 1001
Banjos,
published by Kodansha Amer Inc, 1984. The serial
number dates it most likely to 1938.
It has been kept in a well-humidified, smoke-free
environment while in my custody over the past ten
or so years,
and I believe, likewise previously.
The frets are well seated, and none are
protruding from the sides.
There are no cracks or other signs of dryness
suggesting that it has always been well cared for.
It is in excellent condition with all original
parts, except for one bracket at the 5 oclock
position,
and the skin head (The original would have had a
Formby signature stamp; it is however an old one!)
It is quite resonant. The neck is finished walnut,
the pot is veneered walnut over maple and the
metal components
are gold-plated. The gold-plated flange is shiny,
showing almost no wear except on two small places
on the edge.
The mother of pearl peghead inlay is in perfect
condition as are the position markers.
There is black trim around the pots side,
top and bottom. The gloss wood finish is lightly
checked.
The neck is straight, with no cracks, dings or
holes. There's just light divoting on the top
three frets especially under
the 3rd String, 1st fret. The resonator finish is
marred by scratches from a previous owner,
but I believe they are reparable without serious
first aid. The finish on the bezel is worn.
The hard case is original and functional but
shows signs of age, and the interior padding has
lost its resilience
and is worn, however it is a collector's item in
itself.
I have not made any attempt to restore this
instrument as its lovable just the way it
is.
I would be glad to answer any questions and/or
provide more photos, meet using Zoom and/or chat
on the telephone.
